Our July Limelight feature focuses on one of our newest board members, Tinku Khanwalkar. We sat down with Tinku to find out more about her and why she chose to volunteer with Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Lehigh Valley.
Tinku is the managing attorney at AVK Counsel, LLC, a law firm focused on climate action here in the Lehigh Valley.
What drew you to volunteer at BBBSLV?
I enjoy mentoring children and had heard about the excellent program run by Big Brothers Big Sisters, so I signed up to be a Big Sister. It is one of the best decisions I made. I have immensely enjoyed the time spent with my Little and am gratified to have had the opportunity to be a positive influence in her life. Having had such a positive experience as a Big Sister, I couldn’t have been more thrilled when I was asked to serve on the Board and I look forward to deepening my engagement with BBBSLV in that role
What keeps you motivated throughout the day?
The opportunity to continue to learn and grow and to contribute my talent, knowledge and skills in promoting environmental stewardship and making a difference to the community
Who is one mentor who made an impact on your life?
My father. He taught me the value of the three “Hs” — humility, humor and hard work. He was making people laugh even on the day that he died!
Do you volunteer anywhere else, or, are you involved with other community organizations?
Executive Board of the Minsi Trails Council of Boy Scouts (Vice President of Enterprise Risk Management); Board of PennFuture; Chair of Allentown Environmental Advisory Council; Allentown Water and Sewer Compliance Review Board; Lehigh Valley Chamber of Commerce Energy and Environment Committee; Citizens Climate Lobby
I also provide free legal services through North Penn Legal Services and am currently training to be a Court Appointed Special Advocate for children in foster care.
Describe volunteering with BBBSLV in one word.
Awesome!
