Meet MaryTheresa — A Little Sister with a Big Story

Have you ever been the one everyone else looks up to — even when you’re still figuring things out yourself?

Growing up as the oldest of five children had its perks. I learned to be a good leader, a strong role model, and took on big responsibilities at a very young age. But one of the hardest parts was not having an older sibling to guide me. Unlike my brothers and sisters, I didn’t have someone to show me the way. I’m the first to face the realities of life, and I’m learning as I go — through moments of self-discovery and growth.

When my mom heard about Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Lehigh Valley (BBBSLV) from a friend, she asked if I’d be interested. I ecstatically agreed — having a Big Sister was something I had never experienced. I joined the program during COVID and met with my Big Sister Joanne virtually. That option helped a lot — it made things easier for both of us and allowed us to connect in a way that felt safe and comfortable.

Meeting Joanne for the first time was one of the most eye-opening experiences I’ve ever had. The staff at BBBSLV did an incredible job pairing us together. It was amazing to find someone so similar to me — someone who shared my goals and interests. We often talked about our theatre shows and our dreams for the future. She was finishing her schooling in the healthcare field while I was just starting mine.

As I navigated high school and the college application process, I felt nervous and unsure. But having support from my Big Sistergave me confidence — not just for college, but for whatever comes after.

Through our time together, I learned so much — not just about school or careers, but about life. Being in the BBBSLV mentoring program gave me tools and resources I wouldn’t have had otherwise. Thanks to this program, I’ve learned how to:

  • Communicate effectively and professionally
  • Lead with empathy and understanding
  • Solve problems with confidence
  • Manage my time wisely
  • Write emails and prepare for interviews
  • Stay positive in challenging situations
  • Believe in myself and my abilities

Being mentored has truly impacted my life. I felt comfortable every step of the way, gained self-confidence, and was able to enjoy my last year of high school with less stress. I’ve been given the gift of what it feels like to have an “older sister,” and I’m so grateful for that.

Your support can help another young person like me find their path.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Lehigh Valley gave me more than just a mentor — they gave me confidence, guidance, and a sense of belonging. Your donation makes it possible for more Littles to be matched with caring Bigs like mine — and to feel seen, heard, and empowered.
