Big
Brother Geoff, a 28 year old engineer, and Little Brother
Jeremy, age 13, were matched in March, 1995. Over the
5 ½ years they were matched, Jeremy experienced
school difficulties, a family move out of our Agency’s
immediate service area, fatherhood at age 15, and minor
scrapes with the law and with family members.
Geoff persisted
as a positive, consistent role model in Jeremy’s
life, through difficulties that would have discouraged
many volunteers. Geoff was nominated, by Jeremy, for
"BIG BROTHER OF THE YEAR", in 1999, and received
the award, with Jeremy reading his nomination letter,
at the Agency Volunteer Appreciation Dinner.
Geoff
was transferred to California in 1999, and the match
officially ended, but the friendship has continued.
Jeremy passed his GED test in 1999, joined the United
States Navy in 2000, and is currently (August, 2002)
stationed aboard the U.S.S. JFK aircraft carrier in
the Mediterranean, as a plane captain. Geoff is working
in Barcelona, Spain for six months, and the match recently
reunited in Tarragona, Spain.
